What is the Hands of Tym Academy?
The Hands of Tym Academy is our online school dedicated to the art and craft of leatherwork, bag design and making. Founded by Leathersmith and Bag Designer Georgie Tym, the Academy brings together years of design, craftsmanship, and industry experience to help you develop creative skills, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced maker.
Who are the courses for?
Our courses are designed for anyone with a passion for making. Whether you’re a creative enthusiast, a small business owner looking to refine your products, a design student, or someone simply curious to explore new skills – you’ll find a course to suit your level and interests.
What kind of courses do you offer?
We currently offer our flagship Online Bag Design Course, which guides learners from concept development and research through to technical specification and prototyping.
In future, the Academy will expand to include other craft and design-based courses, such as leatherwork skills, pattern cutting, and product development. Each course is designed to be highly visual, practical, and rooted in professional design principles.

Do I need any experience to join?
No previous experience is required for most of our courses. Each lesson is structured to build confidence step by step, with clear explanations and real-life examples from industry. More advanced courses will indicate any prior knowledge or skills that might help you get the most out of the experience.
What equipment or materials will I need?
Each course provides a clear materials list before you begin. For example, our Bag Design Course may suggest basic tools such as a ruler, scalpel, pattern paper, and masking tape, alongside optional creative materials for concept and colour boards. You’ll be guided through everything you need to get started.
How are the courses delivered?
Courses are delivered online through our learning platform, with video lessons, downloadable resources, and creative exercises. You can learn at your own pace, pause and revisit lessons anytime, and share your progress with our growing community of makers.
How long do I have access to the course?
Once enrolled, you’ll have unlimited access for the full duration specified on your course page (for example, 6 or 12 months). During that time, you can revisit lessons, download templates, and continue refining your work.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes – on successful completion of a course, you’ll receive a Hands of Tym Academy certificate of completion, recognising your dedication and skills development.
Can I access tutor support?
Most courses are self-paced, but certain premium or live workshop options include tutor feedback or Q&A sessions with Georgie and the Hands of Tym team. Details are always outlined on the individual course page.
Can I give a course as a gift?
Absolutely! Our courses make perfect gifts for creative friends and family. You can purchase a course voucher that allows the recipient to start their learning journey whenever they’re ready.
